-Haute Couture: The frills and feathers, froth and fancy... not to mention the fittings. Is this type of sartorial decadence relevant in the 21st century? This exclusive art form has certainly met its match in prêt-à-porter. By the early 1990s, journalists were already speaking of haute couture with an air of impending doom. "The gap between ready-to-wear and couture is narrowing... 'Luxe' level ready-to-wear is now almost as intricate as couture but it doesn't require the inconvenience of sittings," wrote Marion Hume in 1993. The year is now 2010. Let us bring fashion back to reality, away from the lavish reverie of haute couture. As consumers let us mandate that which is both practical and functional, for our wallets and our wardrobes alike.
